The Festival of St. Hildegard V
June 20 - 29, 1997
The University of St. Hildegard
was established in 1993. It is dedicated
to promoting the study, development and utilization of medieval arts,
designs, science and technologies in the Current Middle Ages.
The Windsong
is published daily on
site during the Festival, and contains updates to this schedule. If you
wish to share your skills or sponsor competitions, please contact Aliena
von Bingen for inclusion in The Windsong. Pre-registration for classes
and events is not required unless so noted.
TOURNAMENTS AND GAMES
Hero's Tournament
- Sponsored by Duke Steingrim.
- The winner of this heavy/archery biatholon will be titled the
Hero of St. Hildegard, and wear the Hero's cloak until Festival VI.
Pole Arms
- by Sir Dublin O’Guinn
- Learn to fight with pole arms from an An Tirian legend!
War Games
- The Castle Battle Returns! Heavies and Lights are welcome to sponsor
scenarios in the two permanent wooden strongholds on site.
The Highland Games
- Sponsored by Lyulf and Duncan MacFlandry.
Games will include the Kaber Toss and Stone Throw.
War Lord Tournament
- The winner of this Scottish Games Tournament will be proclaimed
Clan War Lord of Clan MacFlandry until Festival VI.
A Game of Golf
- by Lyulf McFlandry
- Bring your own featheries, woolies, spoons and putters for this
traditional Scottish game. A tournament may ensue…
TEXTILE ARTS
Weaving isn't Everything
- by Raven Qaraton and Valeria Hanim, bat Adama ha Khazari
An introductory demonstration of felting techniques. Learn wool
preparation and flat felting on the first weekend, move on to seamless
felted projects such as socks, hats and pouches later in the week.
- Bring: Fleece if you wish to work on a project; carding equipment if
you have it, matchstick bamboo mats will also be helpful.
Washed and unwashed fleece will be available for sale on site.
Period Fiber Dyes
- by Hoskuld Gunnarson
- A workshop on the dyers' arts, this year focusing on
madder and Turkey red.
- Bring: 2 ounces of wool yarn and $1.
Spinning Circle
- Join Elisif Angantyrsdottir as she demonstrates the use of Viking Age
combs to prepare wool for the drop spindle. Raven Qaraton will
demonstrate how to use a drop spindle. All spinners are welcome to join us!
- Bring: Combs, spindles, distaffs and wool, or your curiosity!
Knitter’s Square
- Learn period knitting techniques from Aliena von Bingen and Kate O’Guinn.
Each instructor will teach a different style of medieval sock.
Bring: a skein of yarn and dp knitting needles size 4,5 or 6.
Applique
- by Lao Khatun
- Work with felt and yarn to produce a 4"x4" piece of ornamentation.
Bring: Embroidery scissors, needle and thread, quilters pins, a pencil.
Your own felt, yarn and a design are optional.
ARCHERY

Bow Making

- Learn the mechanics of a Long Bow, and build one of your own!
Bring: Hand planes, axes, saws and sandpaper
Cost: $20 for a hickory stave, paid directly to Steingrim on site.
Bowstring Spinning

- Spin a string for your new bow!
Arrow Making
- by Julian E. Farnsworth and Arianne of Falconmoors
- What’s a bow without arrows?
Target Archery
- Julian Edward Farnsworth will teach the rules for Inter-Kingdom,
York and Royal Rounds.
- Andras the Truemark will teach Basic, Intermediate and Speed Rounds.

Chain Mail

- Learn how to make this early form of armor. Gordon will also
share new techniques that he has learned over the past dozen years.

Truly Basic Blacksmithing

- Learn to draw, twist cut and flatten a simple object from mild steel.
Bring: a hammer, visegrips, leather gloves
Carving in the Round

- A traditional Father Christmas figure will be the project for this class.
Bring: A basic hand carving set and a rough carving blade.

Goat Milking

- A demonstration. Interested students may be invited to hands-on goat
milkings at 6am daily.
Goat Herding and Husbandry
- by Katerina Owcza Kobieta
- Follow the herds during the day, or stop by the barns for a discussion
on animal maintenance.
CULINARY AND MEDICINAL ARTS
Cheese of Antiquity
- by Katerina Owcza Kobieta
- Make a Feta cheese, in the style of the cheese passed down from
ancient times to the present day mountain shepherds of Greece.
Cost: $2 for materials, paid to Katerina on site.
Hildegard’s Herbalism
- by Raven Qaraton
- A discussion of plants and preparations advocated by Hildegard von
Bingen, who’s medical theories were ahead of her time. Students will
participate in an on site herb walk and collection.

About the Festival...
The Festival of St. Hildegard is a 10 day celebration of medieval life.
Those who attend are encouraged to dress, act and speak in the style of their
pre-1350 contemporaries.
The Festival opens at noon on Friday, June 20, 1997 and closes at dusk on
Sunday, June 29, 1997. You may wish to bring alternate cooking sources in the
event of a fire ban.
Admission is $4 per day for adults, children under 12 are half-price,
children under 6 are free. Advance registration for the entire 10 days of the
Festival is $30 for adults, $15 for children through June 1. Please make
checks payable to the Barony of Blatha an Oir. Send advance registrations to
Sven Redbeard (David Asplund, 429 170th St. S, Spanaway WA 98387.)
There is no additional fee for merchants; please bring period wares and
a donation for the Prize Chest. Food merchants are welcome by prior arrangement. This is a wet site.
Children must be supervised, and pets must
be leashed.
About the Site...
The site offers 106 acres of semi-primitive land, consisting of rolling
hills, forests, meadows, unpaved roads and a working goat farm. There are
perma-biffs and cold water showers. Additional porta-biffs are brought in
for the Festival. Wood and stone are available on site.
There are rocks, dust and uneven terrain. Please wear sturdy shoes and
dress for extremes in temperature. There are also strawberries, onions and
lilacs growing wild on this picturesque property.
Directions:
From West of I-5: Take I-5 South to I-84. Cross the Columbia River at
either Hood River or The Dalles. Take Highway 14 to Lyle, and then Highway
142, through Klickitat. Past mile post 16, turn left onto Wahkiacus Heights
Road. Drive for 3 miles, turn left on Long Road. Turn right at the
Windward sign.
From East of I-5: Take I-90 to I-82, to Hwy. 97. Take Hwy. 142 out of
Goldendale, turn right on Wahkiacus Heights Road. Drive for 3, turn left
on Long Road, and right at the Windward sign.
