Post-grad Studies

Now that the major universities are offering long distance learning options, it's no longer necessary to bear the expense of living in a university town in order to pursue a post-graduate degree.

Instead, one alternative worth considering is for a post-grad student to earn their masters degree through long distance courses while simultaneously participating in Windward's Apprenticeship Program. That way they can (1) improve their educational credentials, and (2) work toward becoming a full member of this organization - accomplishing two meaningful goals at the same time.

Degrees in fields such as Art, History and English are intellectually stimulating but they generally have limited marketablity when it comes time to get a job. By pursuing long-distance post-grad credits and a membership in Windward simultaneously, the post-grad student can improve their marketability at the same time they create a secure base to fall back on should the right job be slow in coming.

And for the person who has a Liberal Arts degree but doesn't want to grind away at an entry level job in an unrelated field, Windward offers a low-cost cooperative way to develop self-employment options.

Pursuing a post-graduate degree while living at Windward makes good financial sense since cost is such a critical factor in deciding whether one can afford to pursue a post-graduate degree or has to take some entry level job just to pay their living expenses. Monthly dues at Windward are $400/month which covers a place to live, a place to study, food, basic utilities including internet access, laundry facilties and storage - it's difficult to get access to that level of support in a university town that cheaply.

Many Liberal Arts graduates find themselves caught in the trap of not being able to get the work they want because of a lack of experience in their field - Windward can help there too. A key part of our program involves working with an Apprentice to help them become financially independent as the Apprentice works to develop a sustainable enterprise based on their skills and interests - a process which is a real education in itself.

Others will be able to use our standing as a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization to establish programs that will demonstrate their abilities in ways that can open doors. Others will use Windward as a low cost way to focus on building their portfolio or developing their skills since every artist, writer or painter needs a body of work to show.
