Portland to Eureka
Alison and Mindy bike the Oregon Coast
Alison and her Minnesotan friend Mindy worked out a plan to do a bike run from Portland, down the Oregon coast, through the redwoods and ending in Ureka, CA. Having never been to that part of the northern Californian coast, your (generally) faithful blogger decided to take some time off to meet them there to transport them and their gear back to Portland.
This time of year, there's generally a few wild fires burning in central Oregon, but they're usually in out of the way places. This trip, I encountered a stretch of highway were the wild fire was burning both sides of the highway, and the setting sun shining through the smoke was so striking that I had to stop and take a pic.
The rest of the trip down was uneventful, and I was able to welcome our two intrepid bikers as they made their way into Eureka some 540 miles from Portland. FWIW, they tell me that on their next biking adventure, they intend to travel much lighter.
