Upgrading the Work Station

getting ready for the interns

  March 5:

Our dining hall is also our wifi hub, and the place where last year most of the interns did their computing work. We had an older computer set up on a card table in the kitchen for people to use to send email, research thngs and check out our collection of cooking DVDs, but now that we have this nifty new computer desk attached to the new sink, Todd decided that it was time to do an upgrade--specifically, the addition of a 19" flat monitor.

We fabricated a bracket in order to mount the new monitor on the wall, and while the paint dries on that, we installed an updated video card to drive the high resolution monitor. Now that we know that computer, video card and monitor are all working together, as soon as the paint dries we can start assembling the new work station.

Well the mounting bracket I made yesterday won't do the job--not enough clearance room behind the scree to use the tools needed to secure the brackets, but as is often the case, one failed design points the way towards a noter. We'll go with Plan 2 tomorrow

The second version of the mounting bracket did the trick--which is better than such things usually go in that it's usually the third evolution of a design that meets our satisfaction, but hey, we'll take a easy one when it comes along.

While the new workstation is trick, what's especially welcome is the sixteen square feet of space that had been taken up by the table that held the computer, space which is now free for some better use.

the empty card table that now can go to storage

Down the road, next winter perhaps, the plan is to build a set of bench seats along the back wall. The benches will provide additional seating, and the seats themselves will provide additional in-kitchen storage.
