Laying in More Apples

getting ready to make cider

We are continuing in the search for abandoned apple trees throughout Klickitat County and becoming quite practiced at spotting trees along the side of the road burdened with red fruit. Yesterday, before the afternoon rain caught us, we gathered about 25 gallons of apples, and today, a clear, crisp fall day, we gathered yet another 40 gallons.

The storage racks are filling up, ensuring that we will have fresh, local, and wildly organic fruit for some time to come. We sort the apples into three categories: eating/baking, cider, and for-the-animals. Walt has been working on fixing the cider press, so we look forward to experimenting with this home-sized press and drinking our own sweet apple cider.
