Environmental/Sustainability Internship in the Pacific Northwest
Wellesley students are invited to consider doing a 12-week course of study at the Windward Center. Windward is a non-profit sustainability research cooperative located on 131 acres of transition ecology forest near the scenic Columbia River Gorge about 80 miles east of Portland. Our focus is on developing community-level solutions to the challenge of sustainably feeding, fueling and clothing people on marginal land.

Windward's holistic approach ranges from the social to the technological. Some of the projects currently underway include:
- dryland permaculture systems
- art as an ecological principle
- sylvaculture as no-till agriculture
- pine and oak forest mycology
- cooperative alternatives to hierarchy
- the role of the arts in sustainable community
- aquaponics and water enrichment
- solar-steam generation of electricity
- entomology and sustainable systems
- conversion of woody biomass to fuel
To get a sense of our approach to creating sustainable systems, check out our ongoing blog at windward.org (click on the Notes from Windward link in the middle of the page).
If you're intrigued by the challenge of weaving together a sustainable way of life in the near term, you can acquire hands-on experience by undertaking an internship, apprenticeship, or fellowship at Windward.
